This plaque is an exceptional object, as it bears the oldest fragment of Biblical verses ever found. Discovered in a burial cave, it was tightly rolled and was probably meant to be worn around one's neck as an amulet.
The inscription is in the Paleo-Hebrew script, the oldest form of Hebrew writing. The many cracks made it very difficult to decipher, but it includes portions of the Jewish priestly benediction form the Book of Numbers, still recited in prayer during festivals and on High Holy Days. It is also part of the Christian Revised Common Lectionary reading for New Year's Day.
Only the first five lines are reproduced on the amulet. Here is the translation of the blessing.
The Lord bless thee and keep thee
The Lord make his face shine upon thee
and be gracious unto thee
The Lord lift up his countenance upon thee
and give thee peace
Numbers 6:24-25

In 1979 two small rolled pieces of silver were discovered in a burial cave in Jerusalem, Israel. When the little scrolls were carefully unrolled, researchers found words from the Book of Numbers inscribed into the silver, written in characters from an ancient Hebrew script.
